Almaviva is the result of a partnership forged to cultivate a super premium Franco-Chilean wine in the château tradition, which has been creating
prized Bordeaux wines for more than a century. The agreement, sealed in 1997, brought together two international wine dynasties, Baron Philippe de
Rothschild S.A. and Viña Concha y Toro S.A., to craft Chile’s most outstanding wine, following strict and enduring codes of quality and excellence.
in the shadow of the Andes climate
Puente Alto, one of the coolest areas of Chile’s Maipo Valley, was recognized over two decades ago as offering perfect conditions for growing
Cabernet Sauvignon, thanks to its stony soil, its rainy winters and the hot days and cool nights of its summer. The 85-hectare (210-acre)
Almaviva vineyard occupies an ideal site cooled by the influence of the Maipo River Valley, which channels winds from the Andes Mountains
looming immediately to the east.
Chile’s sole château winery vineyard
As Chile’s first winery inspired in the Premier grand cru classé or First Growth tradition, Almaviva is sourced from an estate vineyard
dedicated exclusively to this one wine and tended with meticulous care from pruning to harvest. A revolutionary underground drip irrigation
system makes it possible to monitor and deliver the precise amount of water that each vine needs. As the vineyard blocks ripen, fruit is hand
harvested into shallow bins to keep it pristine.
a Singular wine winemaking
A testament to both tradition and technology, the Almaviva winery perfectly integrates design and functionality. Grape clusters are first hand
sorted and then moved solely by gravity to the vinification tanks. After maceration, the wine is drained off by gravity into new French oak barrels
with glass bungs. Vintage 2013 almaviva
The 2013 vintage was characterized as the longest and latest to date. The growing season started with a drier than average winter, yielding only
215 mm of rainfall. Spring followed with heavier rains, which replenished the soil and provided the vines with necessary reserves to develop
evenly throughout the summer. Cooler temperatures in October resulted in a late bud break. This was followed by favorable climatic conditions
during flowering, which resulted in an overall perfect berry set. Temperatures were globally lower than normal this summer. The same tendency
was also observed in autumn, with a clear slowing down of the ripening process in April. This was particularly beneficial to the Cabernet
Sauvignon grapes, harvested between April 17 and May 23. These cooler conditions fostered finesse, depth, and length, giving the wine a
beautiful purity of fresh fruit and clarity.
Tasting notes brilliant
Attractive dark crimson, deep and opaque. The nose is pure and layered, revealing delicate and focused aromas of black cherries, ripe cassis and
violet associated with black licorice, cacao and toffee notes. The mouth shows outstanding amplitude and balance, a luscious texture, bright
acidity, elegance and persistence. The tannins are fine, smooth and silky, enhancing the fresh and juicy character of the year. Precise and wellcrafted,
the wine harmoniously combines elegance and freshness in a cooler and generous vintage.
