Very deep, intense, ruby-red in color. The nose is perfumed and complex with outstanding aromas of ripe red
over subtle notes of crème de cassis, tobacco, and leather. Spice aromas of red and black pepper
mingle with cinnamon and dark chocolate notes. The palate is smooth but structured, with silky tannins that lend
breadth and exceptional voluptuousness. Juicy and generous with delicious sensations very much in accordance
with the nose with aromas of dried figs that explode on the mid-palate and ending on a long, elegant, and
very pleasing finish.
HARVEST
Harvest Date: April 15–29.
The 2012–2013 season began with spring temperatures that were lower than normal in all of Chile’s grape-growing
regions, which delayed budbreak and flowering by 1–2 weeks with respect to the previous season. The winter of
2012 was quite dry and left a deficit in the Colchagua zone’s water supply, although two unusual and abundant
rains in December resulted in vigorous elongation of the grapes and ultimately, in heavier-than-normal bunches.
The summer was also cold, which delayed the onset of veraison and extended it into early February. Additionally,
some precipitation put the more sensitive grapes at risk. February, however, presented some days with high
temperatures, which accelerated ripening somewhat, although the harvest still began two weeks later than in the
previous year. The bunches were quite loose and hung freely from the plants, which made them less susceptible to
the effects of water on the surface of the grapes. The 2013 vintage can be considered a cool, healthy, disease-free
year with good parameters of natural acidity, pH, and moderate potential alcohol levels, resulting in well-balanced,
aromatic wines with tremendous cellaring potential.
VINEYARDS
The vineyards that give rise to our Montes Alpha M are located in the Apalta zone of the Colchagua Valley.
The soils are of granitic origin and thin in the upper, mountainous sectors. They vary in the clay content, depth,
amount of organic matter, and especially the types of rocks and stones found there and range in origin from fluvial
to glacial, which shows the great diversity of soils in our vineyards. Some zones are influenced by the Tinguiririca
River and others by mudslides and the detachment of material from high above in the mountain chain that delimits
the valley. The soils are deep in the flat areas and thinner at the foot of the mountains and higher areas, where
the Cabernet Sauvignon is planted on slopes with up to a 30º inclination. The vines are trained to a simple double
guyot system, and the vineyards are planted to a density of 5,555 vines/hectare (2,250/acre) to obtain yields of
approximately 3.5–4.0 tons/hectare (1.4–1.6 tons/acre). This enables us to obtain our characteristic wines with
tremendous concentration, good structure, outstanding colors, and excellent cellaring potential.
